The 8 Dimensions of Wellness

The model for Wellness used by The Life Balance Team and The Wisdom Cottage @In Due Season is based on the 8 Dimensions of Wellness that interact in a way that contributes to individual quality of life.

Social Wellness is the ability to relate to and connect with other people within our families and communities. Our ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with family, friends and co-workers contributes to our Social Wellness.
Emotional Wellness is the ability to understand ourselves and cope with the challenges life can bring. The ability to acknowledge and share feelings of anger, fear, sadness or stress; hope, love, joy and happiness in a productive manner contributes to our Emotional Wellness.
Spiritual Wellness is the ability to establish peace and harmony in our lives. The ability to resolve between values and actions and to realize a common purpose that brings people together.
Environmental Wellness is the ability to recognize our own responsibility to make a positive impact on the quality of our environment, be it our homes, or our communities.
Occupational Wellness is the ability to get personal fulfillment from our jobs or our chosen career fields while still maintaining balance in our lives. Whether this is work inside or outside of the home, it is important to understand the value we possess as individuals.
Financial Wellness may be best described as a thought and an approach pertaining to your financial status/situation that consists of:
working on creating and maintaining a balance that includes being comfortable with where your money comes from and where it is going.
balancing the mental, spiritual, and physical aspects of money as it pertains to your life.
Intellectual Wellness is the ability to open our minds to new ideas and experiences that can be applied to personal decisions, group interaction and community betterment. The desire to learn new concepts, improve skills and seek challenges in pursuit of lifelong learning contributes to our Intellectual Wellness.
Physical Wellness is the ability to maintain a healthy quality of life that allows us to get through our daily activities without undue fatigue or physical stress. The ability to recognize that our behaviors have a direct impact on our wellness and adopting healthful habits (balanced diet, exercise, etc.) while avoiding destructive habits (tobacco, drugs, alcohol, etc.) will lead to optimal Physical Wellness.

We can often take for granted how much there is to balance and how easy it is to find yourself suffering from health issues and becoming out of balance and unwell! It is not just about eating right and exercising. Wellness requires a balance of all of the above. If our occupational wellness is compromised it affects our emotional wellness and may have negative physical effects. Not every person eating perfectly and exercising loves their job or is happy and may actually be unhealthy.

There are no guarantees that your “occupational” wellness will always be in balance. If you are experiencing a difficult time at work, rely on the tools you acquire to maintain balance or re-balance in your “spiritual or social” wellness. The ability to “make up the difference elsewhere” may be integral in getting you through the difficult time and may even prevent you from suffering negative physical effects.

In closing, we encourage and challenge you to print think of the “dimensions” of wellness in your life that you are be inspired to do a “wellness check” and assess where and how you want and need to begin or continue your Wellness Makeover process. Process means that we never arrive at a point where there is no possibility of improving. It really speaks volumes to the concept that we embrace: Balance is not something you find, it is something that you create. And if you are having a stressful day, take a few moments away, reflect, meditate, pray or do any short activity to ease your mind and find peace.
